On 23rd January
2008, the European Commission presented a reform package aimed at
the practical application of its energy action plan to combat
climate change and promote renewable energy sources, which was
adopted by the European Council at its March 2007 summit.
The climate and energy package contains four proposals for common
EU legislation, which are closely linked:
- Directive on the promotion of renewable energy
sources
- Directive on the amendment to the EU's emission
trading system
- Decision on effort sharing
- Directive on carbon capture and storage
(CCS)
The climate and energy package was approved by the European Council
and adopted by the European Parliament in December 2008.
