The directive to amend the
European Union Gas Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is part of the overall climate and energy package. The revised emission trading system will first and foremost introduce a number of incentive schemes to harmonise the system, which will result in a level playing field for companies within the EU and secure a 20 % reduction of EU greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. It is envisaged that the basic principles of supply and demand in the current emission trading system should increasingly begin to work in the future emission trading system.
