A Strategy on Energy Security

10-11-2009

As part of the Danish Government’s proposal “A visionary climate and energy policy” from 2007, the government has decided that a long-term energy security strategy has to be developed.

The government’s main vision is for Denmark to become completely independent from the use of fossil fuels – oil, coal and gas. The strategy should be adapted to match the national and international climate and energy goals.

The preparation of the strategy for long-term energy security is divided into 2 phases.

The first phase should clarify the challenges which are connected with energy security, especially on the short and medium term. Current challenges could be the implementation of more power from wind mills or the potential consequences when Denmark, one day, no longer is self sufficient with natural gas.

The strategy will also contain a description of the need for regulation that will result from the interaction between different types of energy sources.

A second phase will result in proposals for strategies and action plans. A more specific content of the second phase will be clarified after the Danish Commission of Climate Change Policy will come up with their recommendations for a future strategy for Danish climate policy in the fall of 2010.
